What to Eat in the Andamans: A Local Food Guide

The Andaman Islands have a food culture shaped by settlers from mainland India, Bengal, and the local Karen and Nicobarese communities — plus, unsurprisingly, some of the freshest seafood you'll find anywhere.

Fresh Seafood, Everywhere

Given the location, seafood is the star. Look for grilled or tandoori fish (red snapper and tuna are common), prawn curries, and crab masala at beachside shacks in Havelock and Port Blair. Prices are generally reasonable given how fresh the catch is.

Coconut-Based Curries

Many local dishes lean on coconut, similar to South Indian or Bengali coastal cooking — coconut fish curry and coconut-based prawn preparations are common on local menus, offering a milder, creamier alternative to spicier mainland curries.

Bengali Influence

A significant portion of the Andaman population traces its roots to Bengali settlers, so you'll find good Bengali-style fish curries, mustard-based preparations, and rice dishes in Port Blair especially.

Street Food in Port Blair

Aberdeen Bazaar in Port Blair is the place for casual street food — from momos and rolls to fresh fruit juices, it's a good spot for a quick, affordable meal between sightseeing stops.

Tender Coconut Water

With coconut palms everywhere, fresh tender coconut water is sold roadside across the islands — a genuinely refreshing way to rehydrate between beach visits, and far better than bottled drinks on a hot day.
