10 Things to Know Before You Book an Andaman Trip

The Andaman Islands are unlike most Indian destinations — island-hopping by ferry, patchy mobile network, and a slower pace of life all take a bit of getting used to. Here are ten things worth knowing before you book.

1. Flights Only Land in Port Blair

Every trip to the Andamans starts and ends in Port Blair (now officially Sri Vijaya Puram) — there is no direct flight to Havelock, Neil, or any other island. Onward travel is entirely by ferry.

2. Ferries Need Advance Booking

During peak season, ferry seats between Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil Island sell out well in advance. Book these as early as your travel dates are confirmed.

3. Mobile Network Is Limited

Only BSNL and Airtel have meaningful coverage outside Port Blair, and even then, expect patchy 4G at best on the outer islands. Download offline maps and inform family of your rough itinerary before you lose signal.

4. Cash Still Matters

While UPI and cards are increasingly accepted in Havelock and Port Blair, smaller shops, local boat operators, and roadside eateries on quieter islands may still be cash-only. Carry some cash as backup.

5. Indian Citizens Don't Need a Permit for Most Islands

Indian nationals do not need a special permit for Port Blair, Havelock, or Neil Island. Foreign nationals require a Restricted Area Permit (RAP), typically issued on arrival or online, valid for up to 30 days.

6. Pack Reef-Safe Sunscreen

Given how much time you'll spend snorkeling or diving, a reef-safe sunscreen protects both your skin and the coral reefs you'll be swimming over.

7. Weather Can Change Ferry Schedules

Rough seas can delay or cancel ferries with little notice, especially outside peak season. Build a buffer day into your itinerary if you have a flight to catch on your way back.

8. Budget for Water Activities Separately

Most tour packages cover stays, transfers, and sightseeing — but scuba diving, sea walking, and other water sports are usually priced separately. Factor this into your budget upfront.

9. Alcohol Has Local Rules

The Andamans have their own excise regulations; alcohol is available at licensed outlets and most resorts, but it's worth checking current local rules if this matters to your trip.

10. A Local Travel Partner Saves Time

Because so much of the logistics (ferries, permits, transfers) is island-specific, booking through a local operator who handles these day to day can save a lot of back-and-forth compared to planning everything yourself.
