If you've never dived before, Havelock Island is one of the best and safest places in India to try it for the first time. Here's a realistic look at what an introductory dive actually involves.
Do You Need Experience?
No. Most dive centres in Havelock offer a "Discover Scuba Diving" or introductory dive specifically designed for complete beginners. You'll get a safety briefing on land, followed by a shallow confined-water practice session before heading to open water with an instructor.
What the Session Involves
A typical first dive runs 30–45 minutes underwater, at depths of around 6–12 metres, always with a certified instructor holding onto or swimming right beside you. You'll practice basic hand signals, clearing your mask, and equalizing ear pressure before descending.
What You'll See
Havelock's reefs are home to vibrant coral formations, reef fish, occasional turtles, and — depending on the site and season — reef sharks spotted from a safe distance. Visibility is generally excellent, often 15–20 metres in good conditions.
Is It Safe?
Reputable dive centres in Havelock follow PADI or SSI safety standards, with well-maintained equipment and low instructor-to-diver ratios for beginners (often 1-on-1 or 1-on-2). If you have any heart, lung, or ear conditions, consult a doctor before diving, and always disclose any medical history to your instructor.
Should You Get Certified?
If you enjoy your first dive, Havelock is also an excellent place to complete a full Open Water certification (typically 3–4 days), which lets you dive independently anywhere in the world afterward.
Our Tip
Book your dive for the first or second day of your Havelock stay rather than the last — if weather pushes it back a day, you'll still have time to reschedule.
